Japanese-style water therapy, its benefits and harms, and how to apply it

Water therapy has  recently gained wide popularity and is useful for losing  weight  , increasing metabolism and strengthening  immunity , not only that, but it is also beneficial for the skin , making it glowing and free of defects, so what is the validity of this information?

Hydrotherapy

Japanese water therapy gets   its name from its widespread use in traditional Japanese medicine, as the Japanese people are among the healthiest in the world. Water therapy is less common in Indian folk medicine, according to The Green Creator  .

Water therapy in the Japanese way includes drinking several glasses of lukewarm water on a daily basis when waking up in the morning on an empty stomach, with the aim of cleansing the digestive system and regulating its work, and thus healing a variety of  diseases .

In addition, proponents of Japanese-style water therapy claim that the water when drinking it should be lukewarm, because cold water is harmful, and causes  fats  and oils  in food to harden inside the digestive system, which slows down the digestion process and causes diseases, according to the website.  Health Line  Medical.

How to treat with water

Traditional Japanese medicine recommends following these steps in order to receive and repeat the treatment on a daily basis:

1- Drink 4 to 5 cups of lukewarm water on an empty stomach immediately after waking up and even before brushing  your teeth  .

2- Wait 45 minutes before eating breakfast.

3- In each meal, the eating period should last for 15 minutes, and then wait for at least two hours before eating or drinking anything else.

According to the practitioners of this treatment, water therapy should be performed for different periods according to the condition of the disease, for example:

High  blood pressure : 10 days

Constipation : 10 days

 Type 2 diabetes : 30 days

Cancer : 180 days

Although drinking plenty of water may help treat constipation and blood pressure, there is no scientific evidence to prove that water therapy really helps get rid of type 2 diabetes or any type of  cancer .

Benefits of hydrotherapy

There is no doubt that Japanese-style water therapy is not effective for all diseases, as some claim, but it is certainly an effective treatment for many other health conditions.

Leaves the body sufficiently hydrated

The use of Japanese-style water therapy involves drinking several glasses of water per day, which helps you to keep the  body  sufficiently hydrated, as there are many benefits to hydration, such as improving  brain function , maintaining energy levels, and regulating body temperature and blood pressure according to Reported by the US National Library of Medicine   (PMC).

In addition, drinking more water may help prevent constipation, headaches  , and kidney stones .

Improve skin health and cleanse the body of toxins

According to  Net Meds , water therapy has several benefits that are reflected on  the skin . Drinking a large amount of water will maintain body moisture, and thus  the skin will not become  dehydrated, and it will remain fresh and elastic. Water therapy will also maintain  skin texture  and remove pigmentation.

Hydrotherapy also synthesizes  vitamin D  to protect  the skin  from  the harmful rays of the sun  and improve normal skin functions.

In addition, drinking plenty of water helps the kidneys flush out toxins from the digestive system and supplies its organs with fresh, oxygenated blood.

Weight loss

Practicing hydrotherapy may help you lose weight by restricting the amount of  calories  you consume.

First, by drinking this much water per day, you will drastically reduce your consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, such as  fruit juice  , Coca-Cola, or flavored soda.

Thus, the amount of calories you normally eat will automatically decrease, potentially reaching several hundred calories per day.

In addition, sticking to strict eating rules for only 15 minutes per meal, after which you can't eat again for two hours, may also limit your calorie intake.

Finally, drinking plenty of water may help you feel full and cause you to eat fewer total calories from food.

However, research on the effect of drinking water on weight loss is still unproven. Some studies found positive results, while others did not.

Hydrotherapy damage

Japanese water therapy is associated with side effects and potential harms, including:

overhydration

Hyperhydration, or hyperhydration as it is also called , is a condition that occurs when you drink an excessive amount of water over a short period of time. And it causes a lack  of sodium  in the blood, and a decrease in the level  of salt  in the blood also due to excess fluids.

This disease is dangerous, and it can sometimes lead to death in people with kidney disease, or those who take stimulant drugs, due to the inability of the kidneys to quickly get rid of excess fluid, but it remains generally rare in healthy people .

To stay on the safety line, don't drink more than about 4 cups (1 liter) of fluids per hour, because that's the maximum your kidneys can handle at one time.

Important note :  Before you consider using Japanese water therapy to treat a condition or disease, we recommend that you discuss with your doctor first. It is also important that the treatment is not used as a substitute for medications or instructions that your doctor tells you.
